Namdroling Monastery

A thriving community of about 5,000 lamas, monks and nuns, the Namdroling Monastery was founded by His Holiness Pema Norbu Rinponche. This tranquil monastery is located a few hours away from Bangalore and Mysore. Popular amongst the global travellers, it is known for its teachings, temples and a meditative ambiance. The most striking feature of this serene monastery is the Golden Temple that houses the three towering gold-plated statues of Buddha Shakyamuni, Padmasambhava and the Buddha Amitayus. It is the largest Nyingmapa (Higher Buddhist Studies and Research Centre) teaching centre in the world. Arrange for a visit permit in advance and lose yourself in the rhythmic chants of the monks.

Madikeri Fort

In the small town of Madikeri, stands the landmark site of Madikeri Fort, which was first founded by Muddu Raja in the late 17th century. Originally built using mud, the fort was later rebuilt using granite during the reign of Tipu Sultan. Upon entering it, to the northeast corner you shall notice the two life-size replicas of a stone elephant. Admire the tortoise sculpture, which has initials of King Vijayarajendra inscribed on it and browse through the museum, which was formerly St Marks Church. The fort is also home to the district prison, the Kote Maha Ganapathi Temple and the Mahatma Gandhi Public Library.

Iruppu Falls

Legend has it that the tributary of Kaveri River started to flow when Lakshman younger brother of Lord Rama shot an arrow into the Brahmagiri Hills. Iruppu Falls emerge from the Lakshmana Tirtha River and hence is also known as Lakshmana Tirtha Falls, a sacred sight venerated by pilgrims throughout the year. Near the falls is the Rameshwara Temple, which is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is teeming with thousands of devotees during Shivaratri (Hindu festival). The best time to visit these beautiful falls is during the monsoon when the attractive landscape is green and ornate with beautiful mountains surrounding it.

Take a hike to the peak of Thandiyendamol, which is located at an altitude of approximately 5,472 ft, making it the second highest in the state of Karnataka. The name of the peak itself means the ‘highest point’ and the entire route is flanked with lush grasslands, sheets of wildflowers along the mountain slopes and diverse native fauna. The trek starts from the Nalaknad Palace and takes about three to four hours each way. Another route begins at the Honey Valley Estate, which is twice the distance and should be taken under supervision of a local guide. The best time to undertake this trek is between October to February.

Another venerated pilgrim site is Bhagamandala, which is located in the Kodagu district in the upstream stretches of River Kaveri. It is known for the confluence of three rivers Kaveri, Kannike and Sujyoti, which emerge from the underground and are considered to be sacred. This confluence is colloquially known as ‘Triveni Sangam’ and many pilgrims consider it holy and take a dip here before proceeding for further religious rituals. At a short distance from Triveni Sangam stands the famous Sri Bhagandeshwara temple where the deities Bhagandeshwara, Subramanya, Mahavishnu along with Ganapati are deified. Bhagamandala is also known for its Madhuvana, a bee apiary centre and a Honey marketing centre.
