Durham Castle

The Durham Castle was built in the 11th century and is a Norman castle, which has been taken over by the University College since 1840. Visitors are allowed in but only through guided tours and it houses over a 100 students. The castle has a large Great Hall and two chapels—the Norman Chapel built in 1078 and the Tunstall’s Chapel built in 1540. It is a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site and was used as a command post by the Royal Air Force during World War II.

Durham Cathedral

The Cathedral Church of Christ, Blessed Mary the Virgin and St Cuthbert of Durham, usually called the Durham Cathedral is the seat of the Anglican Bishop in Durham. It was built between 1093 to 1133 and has three towers out of which the central tower stands at an imposing height of 218 ft. It is a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site and is situated exactly opposite the Durham Castle. It was built in the Romanesque style of architecture and remains a place of pilgrimage today. Spread over 300 acres, it has over 304,000 objects including working vehicles, livestock, original and replica buildings and a huge collection of artefacts. The museum receives 350,000 visitors annually and also helps in preserving rare livestock breeds.

Sedgefield Racecourse

This horse racing course situated south of Durham is used only for jump racing. Racing had been taking place here since 1732; however, it was only officially recognised from 1846. The course was bought over by Northern Racing in 2001 and considerable renovation work was done on the Winners Enclosure and bars were upgraded along with the eating areas and the entire drainage system. Scream in joy as your horse races past the others at the finish line at the Sedgefield Racecourse.

Auckland Castle

This is one of the prime attractions in Durham and the foremost country residence of the Prince Bishops since 1190. It is also known by other names such as the Bishop’s Castle and the Bishop’s Palace. The North Pennines is the northernmost part of the Pennine hills located throughout northern England.
