TraveLibro India Goa Featured City Basilica of Bom Jesus

Basilica of Bom Jesus

Visit the most famous Roman Catholic church of Goa, the Basilica of Bom Jesus, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which is said to hold the mortal remains of St Francis Xavier. A highly revered church the world over, at present, it is partly in ruins. Yet, the noteworthy Jesuit architecture lends it a rather redolent and evocative appeal. Marvel at the spectacular edifice displaying a truly gorgeous example of Baroque architecture. The gilded reredos touching the ceiling is ornately decorated and eye-catching. At the top of the façade, you will notice the letters ’HIS’ inscribed, which represent the first three letters of Jesus in Greek.

TraveLibro India Goa Featured City Shantadurga Temple

Shantadurga Temple

Situated on the foothills on the Kavalem Village in Ponda, is the beautiful Shantadurga Temple housing an impressive idol of Goddess Durga. This Goddess is generally depicted with a very angry look on her face, but here in Goa, she is made to look serene. There is a statue of Lord Shiva on one side and Lord Vishnu on the other, which has an interesting legend attached to it. Marvel at the beautiful Indo-Portuguese architecture of the holy place that is quiet unique to a Hindu temple. Admire the six-storey high ’Deepstambha’—a column used to place lighted ‘diyas’ on important religious days.
