La Grand Vitesse

Admire the La Grand Vitesse sculpture which is the ubiquitous symbol of the city, located in the Calder Plaza in front of the Grand Rapids City Hall. Meaning ‘great swiftness’, the sculpture was created by Alexander Calder, an internationally acclaimed artist, in 1969. Perched on a large concrete plaza, the 43-ft tall artistic structure, weighs about 42 tonnes. The structure is painted in Calder Red—a signature colour of the artist, do take a picture with it. The design of this ‘stabile’ structure can be seen on street lights, the city government letterhead, on garbage trucks and other official vehicles as well.

The quintessential pedestrian Blue Bridge formerly served as a railroad crossing over the Grand River in downtown Grand Rapids.
