War Memorial Monument

Pay homage to all those who died in World War I at the World War Memorial Monument, which was built in 1929 after the war. The town sent the most number of men to war than any other town in the country. The Union Government presented two field guns as trophies in recognition, which are mounted on both the sides on the stone cairn. There’s a plaque commemorating Roger Bushell who was the mastermind behind the Great Escape and another bronze plaque lists names of those who lost their lives in both the World Wars and the Bush War.

Indulge in some whale watching while in Hermanus. The best time to enjoy this activity is between July to November. Watch them from land, by boat or get an aerial view. If you wish to get closer, take a guided sea kayaking tour. Hermanus is the breeding ground for the Southern Right Whale during winter and spring, when they come to mate and calve. Once hunted, they are now a strictly protected species.
