Golkonda Fort

Also known as ‘Golla Konda’, which translates to ‘Shepherds Hill in English’ the Golkonda Fort, is a mud structure built in 1143, during the reign of the Kakatiya Dynasty. During the Sultanate era this granite edifice became the seat of Qutb Shahi Dynasty and was expanded into a glorious complex. In the late 16th century the fort was acquired by the Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb after a nine-month long siege. An architectural splendour, the complex possesses acoustic properties, which were used to alert the royals during any attack. The iconic gemstone ‘Kohinoor’ was also discovered here. Plan an evening trip to enjoy the Sound and Light Show.

Charminar

One of the famous landmarks of India, the impressive structure of Charminar was erected during 1591 by Mohammed Quli Qutub Shah. This massive structure has many stories entailing its construction— it was built by the ruler for his wife Bhagyamathi, second story says to honour Allah for ending a plague. Another myth was that a secret tunnel runs under this monument, which leads to the Golkonda Fort. Charminar is a square-shaped structure that is adorned with four minarets, giant arches, domes, and boasts of Hindu architectural features. This masterpiece stands amidst a bustling area flanked with shops, stalls and hawkers.

Another temple that is popular amongst the tourists and locals alike is the Shri Jagannath Temple, a replica of the Jagannath Temple of Puri in terms of its architectural style. The temple is dedicated to Lord Jagannath along with his siblings Balabhadra and Subhadra and also houses shrines of other deities such as Lord Shiva, Lord Ganesha, and Goddess Laxmi. Attend the ‘Rathyatra’, a famous festival, which is an annual procession where the idols of main deities are carried on elaborately decorated chariots.

The most interesting tomb here is that of Muhammed Quli Qutub Shah, founder of Hyderabad, along with tombs of members of the royal family, physicians, courtesans, and others. The landscaped garden and the enthralling monuments make it a perfect spot for photography.
