Freedom Monument

What Statue of Liberty is to New York, the Freedom Monument is to Riga. The 42-m high monument, crafted from granite, travertine, and copper, is an important icon of independence and sovereignty of Latvia and honours soldiers killed during the Latvian War of Independence. The sculpture of the lady holds three stars representing the three historical regions of the country: Kurzeme, Vidzeme and Latgale with words “For Fatherland and Freedom” engraved on its column. Apart from recalling its freedom struggle, you can also spot newlyweds posing for pictures here. When weather permits, the honour guard change ceremony takes place every hour from 9 am to 6 pm.

Latvian National Opera

Not only is the Latvian National Opera a unique architectural masterpiece, but it also holds enchanting performances by world renowned artists. Designed by the St Petersburg-based architect Ludwig Bohnstedt back in 1863, it historically catered to the German-speaking audience. It is known to screen classical and romantic opera and ballet; however, contemporary forms are slowly becoming a stable. The opera-lovers can catch the Latvian National Opera and Ballet season during summer. Alternately, there’s the Sigulda Opera Festival that witnesses a strong line-up of opera singers, original productions and concerts performed on the open-air stage in the stunning surroundings of Sigulda Castle’s courtyard.

Not only does the interiors of the Riga Orthodox Cathedral envelope you with serenity, its façade bring out that feeling too. The yellow-brick structure is complemented with five glitzy voluptuous domes that dazzle on a sunny day. Built in the 19th-century, its architectural aesthetics mimic the Neo-Byzantine style. The grandeur will leave you spell-bound, so will its history; the Russian Orthodox cathedral stood the test of time through during the First World War. It was converted into a Lutheran church and later back to its original, once Latvia gained independence. It is, till date, the largest Orthodox cathedral in the Baltic provinces.

The Cat House

The two cat figurines perched atop the turrets of this building got this structure a spot in Riga’s book of legends. The medieval-style building drips with interesting tales. Constructed in 1900’s, it served as a residence cum office building, dressed with elaborate elements of Art Nouveau. It is situated at the Livu Square, opposite the Great Guild hall. Legends suggest that after the owner was denied entrance to the guild, he had these figurines put up with posteriors pointing towards the offending guild. In present times, these quirky figurines seem to catch the fancy of the shutterbugs.

The exhibits elaborate Latvia’s occupations during three phases: the half-a-decade during the 20th century when Latvia was successively occupied by the USSR, then by the Nazis in 1941, then again by the USSR in 1944 until when Latvian finally became independent in 1991. The artifacts, archive documents and other displays showcase distinguished facts relevant to Latvia’s history.

TraveLibro Latvia Riga Featured City Rozena Street

Rozena Street

The narrow, slender street is an important one in the Old Town. With a width of 1.80 m, this cobbled passage is so slender that not more than two people can walk side-by-side. This was an important route during the medieval period; today this quaint lane houses many eateries. Sip on cold beer and walk through the narrowest street in Riga; you may even choose to go back in time with a quite dinner at one of the medieval restaurants.
