Jūrmala

Jurmala is a resort town located 25 km west of Riga, and is the 5th largest city in Latvia. It is famous for it’s 33 km beach, covered with white quartz sand and it’s shallow clear waters, that equipped with playgrounds, benches, football fields and volleyball courts. International sporting contests like sailing, rowing and water-skiing take place here, and pieces of amber can be found here in the summer months.

Gauja National Park 

The Gauja National Park in Vidzeme is the largest park of it’s kind in Latvia, covering an area of 917 km. This park has been started with the sole purpose of protecting the ancient valley of the Gauja River, and over 500 cultural monuments can be found here. One can find almost 900 plant species, 149 bird and over 48 mammal species in this territory, and the walking and nature trails in the Sigulda area are quite famous.

Rundāle Palace

The Rundale Palace is an 18th century Baroque styled palace built between 1736 – 1768, and is situated 12 km west of Bauska. It is one of the noteworthy attractions of Latvia, and are used to host and accommodate guests from various foreign nations and also serves as a museum, along with the surrounding gardens. This is one of the two major Baroque palaces built for the Dukes of Courland, the other one being the Jelgava Palace.

Museum of the Occupation of Latvia in Riga

The Museum of the Occupation of Latvia is a historic museum that was set up in 1993, to record and house the extensive artifacts, documents and educate the people about the 51 year old occupation of Latvia from 1940 - 91, by the USSR in 1940, the Nazis in 1941 and once again by USSR in 1944. It is a popular attraction, and more than 1,00,000 visitors come here including state guests. The places of interest here are the Permanent and Temporary Exhibitions, the Virtual Museum and the KGB Building.

Bob Sleighing in Sigulda

Sigulda also called the ‘Switzerland of Latvia’ already started forming it’s bobsleigh tracks in the 19th century, and the highlight is the 900 metre long ice road with a single curve. The unique feature of this bobsleigh and luge track, is that it is not only restricted to experts as anyone can experience it firsthand. It is spread over 1,420 metres and has 16 curves with a 200 metre braking distance.

Explore the medieval Cēsis Castle

The Cesis Castle is situated in Cesis and is a Livonian castle, built in the 13th century. It is said to be one of the best and impressive castle ruins ever, and is enclosed by a granary and a stable coach, which currently houses the Exhibition Hall of the Museum. The castle also has a park, which has is characterized by it’s winding footpaths, exotic plants and the water in the pond reflecting the castle ruins in it.

Night Kayaking in Riga 

When the lights come on in Riga, one of the things you can indulge in is night kayaking! This is an experience of a lifetime, as you skim through the waters of the Daugava River and the Riga Canal, and see most of the city highlights like the Old Town, the Vansu Suspension Bridge, the Riga Port, the iconic Railway Bridge and feel the frsh air as it caresses your face and rejuvenates you throughout the adventure.

Saint Peter's Church in Riga

The St. Peter’s Church is a parish church in the historical centre of Riga, dedicated to Saint Peter and was built in the 13th century. It is built in a combination of the Gothic, Baroque and the Renaissance style of architectures, and is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites. It is today, a cultural and art centre, where one can gain insights on the past and present traditions on art and architecture.

The Turaida Castle

The Turaida Castle is a reconstructed medieval castle, that was built in 1214 and is located opposite the Gauja River. The red bricks and overall shape of the castle resembles a ship, and by the start of the 20th century only a few parts of the castle like the main tower, the semi rounded tower and the western section were left. If you climb up the main tower, you can get an amazing view of the landscape surrounding the Turaida Castle, as well as the Turaida Museum Reserve.

Riga's Central Market

The Riga Central Market started in 1930, and is the largest and most progressive market in Europe. Stroll through the market and explore the various stalls showing their wares like fruits, vegetables, meat, fish, poultry, grocery and dairy products. It is spread over 72,000 metres and has over 3,000 stands proudly showing off their daily produce.
